June 2026 Math Placement Information - Grade 5 Families

Information for Families of Grade 5 Students Regarding Middle School Math Placements

Tenafly Public Schools strives to place each student into the appropriate math course as they move into the Middle School, at which time the first opportunities for advanced math courses are presented.  A variety of criteria are used to determine math course placements into the following sequences:

Grade Level

Sequence 1

Sequence 2

Sequence 3

Grade 6

Math 6

Math 6

Math 7 Advanced

Grade 7

Math 7

Math 7 | Math 7 Advanced

Geometry

In Grade 6, students are placed in either Math 6 or Math 7 Advanced based on the following criteria:

  • Grade 5 math performance
  • District-wide benchmark assessments
  • Teacher recommendation
  • NJSLA scores

For consideration of placement into Math 7 Advanced in Grade 6, the following minimum criteria must be met:

  • The majority of Grade 5 report card math scores across each of the three trimesters are expected to fall in the highest category of “4 - Exceeding Learning Standards”.
  • Grade 5 i-Ready Diagnostics scores across each of the three assessment windows are expected to fall in at least the 90th percentile.
  • Students must be recommended by their respective Grade 5 math teacher based on students’ overall performance and studentship skills.
  • Most recent state testing data (NJSLA) is reviewed, depending on state release dates; students are expected to have scores in the “Exceeding Expectations” category.

Regarding the sequences above, in order for any TPS student to be placed in a certain course, all prerequisite courses must be completed here in the Tenafly Public School District.  Coursework completed over the summer at another educational institution will not be accepted.  For additional detail on the middle school math program, please refer to the TMS Program of Studies found on our district website.  An FAQ is also available on the district website, linked here: TPS Math Placement FAQ.

Placements for the 2026-2027 school year will be                              finalized and viewable in the Genesis Parent Portal by                                           1pm on Thursday, June 18, 2026.
