Incoming 6th - Information & Important Dates

Panel Discussion "Stepping into the Middle" - Wednesday, June 4, 7:00-8:00pm, McCandless Room at the Tenafly Public Library. 

• This is for all incoming 6th grade parents (only).  Whether you’ve been here before, or you are “stepping into the middle” for the first time, we invite you to ask questions, exchange ideas, and expand your parent network.

• August 21, 2025  Grade 6 Meet & Greet 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM: Invitations and reminders will be emailed to parents over the summer and information will be posted on our website.  All incoming 6th graders will spend one morning touring the building and will have a chance to meet students from other elementary schools in addition to some 8th graders who can help them in September. If your child is unable to attend the Meet and Greet, that won’t be a problem- do not change your vacation plans!  The Meet and Greet can be a fun event for our students, but it is by no means a necessary component for transition into Middle School.  The first few weeks of school are designed to help our sixth graders adjust to their new school and settings.

All 5th graders spend one morning at TMS for an orientation.  On the day of their visit, 5th grade students should arrive at the middle school on Sunset Lane by 8:00am, near the red picnic tables in front of the cafeteria entrance. The orientation will conclude around 11:00am and students will walk or be bussed back to their elementary school. 

5th grade visit dates - May 2025: 

• Mackay - Monday, May 19
• Smith - Tuesday, May 20
• Maugham - Wednesday, May 21
• Stillman - Thursday, May 22

TMS administrators and next year's 6th grade counselor will visit each elementary school during school hours. 
Students will be introduced to our curriculum and learn about our extracurricular opportunities. 

• February 4 - Stillman and Mackay
• February 5 - Maugham and Smith

Students need to make two important choices in preparation for sixth grade.

• World Language:  We offer Spanish, French, and Mandarin Chinese.
• Performing Music: We offer band, chorus and orchestra.   

The forms for these choices are now available on the Genesis Parent Portal.  These forms must be completed by Friday, March 14.
