Vice Principal - Allie Slane

Ms. Allie Slane

My first career was working as a chemist at the Forensic Laboratory run by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. My duties included identifying suspected controlled dangerous substances. Part of my job was testifying to my findings in court. Ever since my first time testifying in juvenile court, I have had the feeling that I could be doing more to help children. My experience with juvenile cases sparked my desire to teach. I enrolled in a continuing education program for professionals looking to join the teaching profession and earned my certification.

Since then, I have spent 15 years as an 8th grade science teacher at Leonia Middle School. During my tenure as a classroom teacher, I came to believe that the root of education is the relationship between the students and their teachers. Seeing and acknowledging who they are outside of the classroom establishes trust, which is the foundation of a learning environment that allows students to ask questions, make mistakes, and explore.

These principles that I gained as a classroom teacher will guide me as VP of TMS. Building relationships, engaging with faculty and families, operating with intention and purpose, asking questions, gaining feedback, and seeking solutions are all actions that create trust. This, then, allows for a strong culture that creates an environment of teachers willing to engage in reflection and change. When this occurs, students can demonstrate academic and social growth as well as participate in a school community built on respect.

It is a great privilege to support the families and students of Tenafly and a great day to be a tiger.
